The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Global Intellectual Property Center (GIPC) today released its 2010 intellectual property (IP) agenda as proposed to the U.S. Congress and the Obama administration. Highlighting the economic contributions of America’s IP-intensive industries, the GIPC urged the administration and Congress to protect IP rights and America’s innovative sectors as a way of spurring job creation and economic growth.

“Our government’s efforts to promote and protect our innovative and creative industries will be a crucial element of our economic recovery,” said David Hirschmann, president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber’s GIPC. “With the recent appointment and confirmation of Victoria Espinel as the first U.S. Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator, we call on the administration to deliver the congressionally mandated National IP Strategy this summer. A government-wide national intellectual property strategy should be a fundamental part of our nation’s job strategy.”  Read more....

Repeal Would Restore U.S. Compliance with IP Treaties

Mark Esper, executive vice president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Global Intellectual Property Center (GIPC), called for a full repeal of Section 211 of the FY 1999 Omnibus Appropriations Act today. Testifying before the House Judiciary Committee, Dr. Esper emphasized the importance of intellectual property (IP) rights to job creation and to the nation’s overall global competitiveness and recommended this repeal to comply with current U.S. trade obligations and to maintain America’s status as a defender of IP rights and the rule of law. When two of America’s most prominent voices on jobs and the economy say the same thing, well, it is time to take notice. When it’s the US Chamber of Commerce and the AFL-CIO, then Washington should really pay attention. At its recent meeting in Orlando, the AFL-CIO Executive Council released a statement detailing the damage intellectual property theft causes to America’s workers and our economy, and further offered support for efforts to combat the growing crimes of piracy.

This is music to our ears, and I commend the AFL-CIO for releasing this statement.  But actually, labor has been on the right side of this issue for some time, and we’ve worked closely with some of the unions in the past in defense of strong IP rights.  Read more....

A robust Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) has the potential to enhance international cooperation in fighting IP theft and for enhancing and better enforcing IP rights. Safeguarding these IP rights is especially important to owners of small and medium-sized businesses who rely on the protection of their ideas in order to get their ventures off the ground.

To help highlight the importance of IP to businesses of all shapes and sizes, the U.S. Chamber is organizing a letter from business owners from around the country to the U.S. Trade Representative, Ambassador Ron Kirk. This letter expresses our support for a robust Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA).
