GIPC at the Raisina Dialogue 2019: A World Reorder

Year after year, the Raisina Dialogue draws heads of state, business executives, and thought leaders from all fields to New Delhi to discuss the most challenging issues facing our global society. At the 2019 Raisina Dialogue, “A World Reorder,” GIPC helped focus more than 2,000 thought leaders from 92 countries on the challenge of sustaining a high rate of human progress through investment in innovation and creativity.

At the Raisina Dialogue, the GIPC team led by SVP Patrick Kilbride together with Jared Parks, Executive Director of Advocacy & Public Affairs, and Hemal Shah, Director of International, facilitated multiple formal and informal discussions with international delegates on how to structure intellectual property ownership to foster innovation and creativity in their home countries. The GIPC team leveraged the delegation and the high-level Raisina platform to reach a number of key Indian audiences.

On January 9, Kilbride convened a roundtable to discuss the contours of GIPC’s new “Fair Value for Innovation” initiative.  GIPC partnered with Dr. Amit Kapoor, CEO of the Institute For Competitiveness’ India chapter and advisor to the Government of India’s state innovation index for this discussion titled, “Building on Jugaad: India’s Road to Transformative Innovation.” The discussion provided opportunities to underscore policy drivers, including intellectual property, among diverse public and private sector stakeholders and partners in India.

The following day, GIPC convened a strategic markets task force meeting with local member representatives in New Delhi. This off-the-record planning session aimed to exchange and coordinate patent policy-related advocacy plans across the country’s top innovative sectors to enable effective outcomes in India. The discussion included representatives from the Organization of Pharmaceuticals Producers of India (OPPI), Business Software Alliance (BSA), In-House IP Professionals forum (I-HIPP), and Alliance for Agri Innovation (AAI).

Back at the Raisina Dialogue, on January 10, GIPC curated a panel discussion on “Innovation Capital: Ideas for Industrialization 4.0.” Convened by India’s Ministry of External Affairs and the Observer Research Foundation in New Delhi, the Raisina Dialogue has emerged as the country’s leading convention on geopolitics and geo-economics. In recognition of the Dialogue’s significance, GIPC positioned a discussion on IP and innovation policy on this platform, identifying the subject as an important piece of geo-economic strategy.

Led by GIPC’s Patrick Kilbride, panelists included Amitabh Kant, CEO of NITI Aayog, the Indian Prime Minister’s policy think tank, Francis Gurry, Director General of WIPO, Pippa Hall, Director of Innovation and Chief Economist at the UK IP Office, and Vivek Lall, Vice President for Strategy and Business Development at Lockheed Martin.

As part of this panel, GIPC announced the launch of its “Fair Value for Innovation” initiative. Please see here the full text of the press release, a link to the full video of the panel discussion, as well as a shout-out from WIPO on GIPC’s Fair Value for Innovation.
