Global IP Champion Spotlight Blog: Ana María Magaña-Rodríguez
Year after year, we have seen Mexico place greater emphasis on shoring up intellectual property (IP) rights – ensuring that creators, business leaders, and innovators in Mexico are protected. This year, Mexico moved up two spots, from 24 to 22, on the 2019 US Chamber International IP Index, in large part due to their continued commitment to advancing awareness around IP rights in Mexico and working across borders to ensure that the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement has a strong IP focus.
We salute those who are helping usher in a new era of IP laws in Mexico and one such hero is Ana María Magaña-Rodríguez. Her commitment to IP law is why the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Global Innovation Policy Center has chosen her as one of our 2019 Global IP Champions.
Magaña-Rodríguez is an accomplished IP attorney specializing in copyright law. From her work on IP rights in NAFTA, to handling the logistics, design, and execution of the Mexican Network for Cinematographic Journalists’ first seminar, Magaña-Rodríguez is one of Mexico’s leading IP attorneys. She also served as president of the Intellectual Property Committee of American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) Mexico until August 2019.
Currently the Managing Director of the Motion Picture Association Mexico, Magaña-Rodríguez represents the intellectual property interests of leading Hollywood studios, including Twentieth Century Fox, Disney, Netflix, Paramount, Sony, Universal and Warner Bros. Entertainment. She also champions IP through her role as president of the Committee on Intellectual Property in the American Chamber of Mexico. As president, Magaña-Rodríguez focuses on the promotion of an effective legal framework of protection, and a culture of legality. She is also a Member of the Board of Directors of the Coalition for Legal Access to Culture and is a Commissioner of Communication at the Interinstitutional Committee for Care and Protection of Copyright and Industrial Property of the Attorney General of the Republic.
Magaña-Rodríguez was a leader in copyright and IP protections throughout the early years of her career as well. Fresh off a law degree from ITESM (Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey) Campus Estado de México, and a master’s degree from the Universidad Tecnológica de México (UNITEC), she worked for nearly a decade as a copyright analyst and attorney at some of the leading law firms in Mexico.
The continued contributions made by Magaña-Rodríguez to the global IP landscape are noteworthy, particularly her work protecting creators in the beloved entertainment industry. With such an esteemed career to date, it is clear that Magaña-Rodríguez will continue to exemplify excellence in the field of IP law in the years to come. Creators and other IP stakeholders around the world – not just Mexico – are better off thanks to the leadership of Magaña-Rodríguez.
The IP Champions awards, presented by the Global Innovation Policy Center, recognize leading innovators, creators, and the policymakers who support their work. Since 2013, the awards have been presented annually to honorees from around the world at a ceremony hosted by the GIPC in Washington, DC. The 2019 IP Champions Gala will take place on October 29, 2019. For more information, click here.
